Pre-Trip Fitness Prep

Pumped for your trip? Make sure you’re physically prepared!

Pre-trip fitness prep

Your wilderness trip will be physically demanding, and you will be using your body in different ways than you are used to. Summer Search wants to make sure you are as prepared as possible for your summer experience, and that includes physically!

How to Get Started?

  1. Make a plan for yourself based on what you are curious about trying and what you think would work best for you – take a look at the suggestions below!

-When/what time of day do I plan to work out?

    -Where can I work out?

-How long should my workout last?

-How many times a week should I work out?

  2. Talk with your mentor about your plan – so that you can have help with support and accountability.

  3. Get started!

Signs of a good plan?

  • Matches your current fitness level.

  • Starts slow and builds over time.

  • Balanced plan that supports strength, flexibility and overall body health.

  • Includes some exercises that will target the muscles you will use most on your trip.

  • Allows time for recovery but is still consistent.

  • Is written down so you can reference it.

Potential Workout Ideas

  • Have a dance party with friends.

  • If you have stairs, climb up and down for 10 minutes at a time. Or work them into a strength routine with moves like inclined pushups or tricep dips.

  • Make up your own jump rope and shadowboxing routine. No equipment required.

  • Stream a free yoga video. Now is an ideal time to perfect that warrior pose.

  • Get outside: take a long walk, jog, or run.

  • Play active games (like soccer, handball, double Dutch etc.) with your family and/or friends.

  • Do some wall-sits while you read a book.

  • Make up a circuit workout with different activities in each room, like jumping jacks, burpees and lunges.

  • Volunteer at your local community garden — you’d be surprised at how exhausting tilling, planting, weeding, and harvesting can be!
