 Sophomore summer Experience checklist

Complete all these items to prepare for your Sophomore Experience! Please note, many items need to be completed by a specific date; otherwise, you may not be able to participate in your experience. 


  1. Research & Share

    Find out more about your summer experience! Explore this website and talk to your family about your trip.

  2. Mentor Check-Ins

    Talk regularly with your mentor about your summer program and goals. Ask any questions you might have!

  3. Schedule a Physical (March)

    All students participating in our wilderness activities are required to have a physical to ensure safety — this is a program requirement. We’ll find the perfect fit for you regardless of your medical conditions!

  4. Apply for an ID (April)

    Schedule a physical appointment within a week of submitting your application to your summer program. You may need ID to travel between states or by train — talk to your mentor!

  5. Apply for your Summer Experience & Complete All Paperwork (by 5/1)

    Submit your application for your summer program and complete all secondary paperwork or documents (ex. health form, student contracts, P/G signatures, references). We are here to support you if you need help!

  6. Trip Prep

    Create a plan with your mentor to prepare physically and/or emotionally — check out our physical prep page!

  7. Set Trip Goals with your Mentor

    Set intentional goals to work on during your trip. What you are nervous and excited about?

  8. Summer Send-Off

    Come celebrate with all Summer Search high school participants as we send each student off to their summer experiences! Find this event on our calendar here.

  9. Equipment Distribution & Travel Itinerary (“Goodbye Groups” - May/June)

    Attend this MANDATORY event to receive your hiking boots and other summer experience equipment. We’ll share your travel itinerary, and you’ll also meet the other Summer Search students attending your summer program with you! Check in with your mentor and find the event on our calendar here.

  10. Goodbye Conversation

    Meet with your mentor the week prior to the start of your program.

  11. Embark on your experience!!
