About the Program
Jackson Hole Science Expedition
Study the natural sciences in one of the most beautiful and ecologically complex wilderness areas in North America. Unlock the mysteries of Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks through focused scientific observation and a place-based curriculum that centers culture, economy, and ecology.
-
Sharpen your analytical thinking and scientific research skills by conducting exploratory investigations in Yellowstone National Park. By your third week, you will be ready to propose, design, implement, and present a scientific research project. Tie all your work together with a 1-week backcountry trip through Teton National Park to culminate your experience.
Check out this pdf for more program details.
-
Except for your week in the backcountry, you will be staying at the Teton Science Schools' Kelly Campus, located in Kelly, WY. Restrooms and accommodations are gender-specific. Accommodations include a variety of historic log cabins and will likely be dormitory-style.
Teton Science Schools typically provides breakfast and dinner in the dining lodge, while lunches are eaten in the field. Participants pack their lunches in the dining lodge, immediately following breakfast. Snacks are available in the dining lodge.
-
This is an open enrollment program, which means non-Summer Searchers will be able to join your group and you’ll meet folks from diverse backgrounds. There may be a couple of other Summer Searchers attending the same program, but most people will probably not know each other!
-
You will not be able to use your phones, radios, music players, or any electronic device that connects to the internet once you arrive at the program campus. However, limited communication with friends/family back home is available. Anyone attempting to contact you while you are on-program must send an email to summer@tetonscience.org and putting your name (first & last), followed by the program name (Jackson Hole Science Expeditions) in the subject area. This email will be printed and given to students.
Parents and Guardians are always able and welcome to call the program if necessary -- leaders always have working cell phones and service. While time off/trips into town are not possible, immediate family members are also welcome to visit. Please call ahead to make sure students will be available.
In case of emergency, please use our 24/7 hotline - Summer on Call. Learn more about this service here.
-
You will need to travel by plane to Wyoming. A NY REAL ID is required to travel by plane.
Juniors will not accompanied by Summer Search to the airport. Sophomores will be able to meet Summer Search staff at the airport and walk with them to their gate. Program staff will meet all students at the airport in Wyoming and travel with them to their final destination. Program staff will remain with them until they return to the airport for their return flight.
-
We recommend having $30-75 for personal spending. You may want to buy snacks, postcards, or souvenirs!
